‘The Bundeswehr is entirely at the service of the citizens of Germany. As an army of democracy, it is deeply rooted in society. Yet many people rarely meet the military. Once a year, this change. On Bundeswehr Day, the armed forces open their doors to all who are interested. Soldiers and civilian employees invite everyone on to their barracks, airfields, and research facilities to experience the work of the armed forces and their military technology firsthand.’ Bundeswehr

On June 28, 2025, this special day took place for the eleventh time. The Bundeswehr opened its doors at ten locations across Germany and gave visitors a firsthand experience of its missions, capabilities, and, above all, to meet and speak with the people in the force. In addition to promoting exchange with society, there were celebrations of 70 Years of the Bundeswehr, and 70 Years of Germany in NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). This shows that the Bundeswehr is ready – for national and alliance defence, for security and peace.

More than 280,000 visitors, more than ever before, visited the locations to get a glimpse behind the scenes at the Bundeswehr. Those unable to attend in person could follow the program online via a YouTube livestream. The program was broadcast from the glass studio at Jagel Airfield – with links to all locations, background discussions, and live interviews. Dynamic demonstrations, air shows, hands-on technology, and face-to-face discussions were offered at all of the locations.

Bundeswehr Day 2025 was a special day across Germany – from the far north to the south. In Jagel, the Air Force impressed with flight demonstrations of the Eurofighter and the Tornado. In Stralsund , the focus was on naval ships and a public ceremonial oath of allegiance at the Naval Technical School. In other cities such as Delitzsch, Cologne, Neubrandenburg, Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Bückeburg, Greding, Freyung, and Diez, various branches of the Bundeswehr presented themselves – from cyber and information services, the medical service, to support services, from Army Aviation to defence technology.

Airspeed Media visited Jagel to see the mighty ‘Fin’ in action in the from the resident Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 51 and to check out the various maintenance facilities that would be accessible on the day to see how these aging, but potent aircraft are kept flying for the Luftwaffe.

Jagel was very busy with the air base offering a diverse program on the ground and in the air with static displays of the Tornado, EF2000 Typhoon, A400M, C-130J, Tigre, NH-90 and CH-53G with aircrew available to understand how these aircraft are utilised by the Luftwaffe in their roles.

Aerially there was a demonstration of how the Bundeswehr defends Germanys air space. After five local TLG 51 Tornados departed they arrived back with an A400M and a pair of Typhoons demonstrating Air to Air Refuelling. The Typhoons then performed Combat Air Patrols over the airfield and soon after two pairs of Tornados arrived back at the airfield low level, simulating attacks on enemy positions. After multiple passes a CH-53G arrived on scene simulating hostage rescue, offloading troops and securing the position, with the help of the Tornados diving in and completing strafing runs, this allowed the arrival of a C-130J to extract the hostage. The C-130J departed with a steep climb out and moments later the CH-53 arrived to collect the inserted troops with both the Tornados and Typhoons continuing their cover roles.

Tag Der Bundeswehr is a fantastic opportunity to access bases across Germany and see how the Bundeswehr employ their assets through various scenarios but additionally how they fit into the wider Bundeswehr.
